Hokulea Homecoming!
Aloha mai kākou,
We are so happy to share with you the upcoming events at #Honolua this #August ! As many of you probably know Honolua was the starting point for the #Hōkūleʻa’s first voyage to #Tahiti on May 1, 1976. Three years ago Hōkūleʻa embarked on a worldwide voyage to share the message of #MālamaHonua (take care of the earth) with the world and now that Hōkūleʻa has returned to #Hawaiʻi nei the crew will continue to spread the message of Mālama Honua here in the Hawaiian islands and share with us their experiences and mana'o (what they learned throughout their voyaging). Hōkūleʻa and voyaging canoes #Hikianalia and #MoʻokihaOPiʻilani will be at Honolua on the weekend of August 19-20 to engage our community in Mālama Honua action. Please #Share This #Post With Everyone !!
On behalf of the #SaveHonoluaCoalition, I am honored and humbled to be able to share with you our small role in this historic event and ask for your help. We will be working in partnership with #PuʻuKukuiWatershed crew, #AhaMoku, Polynesian Voyaging Society as well as the local canoe clubs to help coordinate an anticipated crowd of thousands at Honolua to greet the crew with cultural protocol as they come ashore 8/19/17 8:00AM and walk with our community (appx .7 miles) to #WaoKeleOHonolua (formerly #Field52) to plant 3,000 native trees (1,000 of which will be #Koa trees - Koa tree planting traditionally signifies a momentous event and connects our land and ocean as Koa were traditionally made into canoes).
We will be holding a #community #cleanup on #Saturday, #August 12, 2017 to clear the area near the boat ramp of low hanging trees (to set up two tents) and weed eat where needed. Save Honolua Coalition has put in a request to the Board of Land and Natural Resources to use #LipoaPoint for event parking (the area usually used by the World Surf League - when they hold their contest) this was done at the request of the Puʻu Kukui watershed crew and Polynesian Voyaging Society representative for #Maui, Archie Kalepa since the back field at DT Flemings was already being used by the Xterra Adventure Fest Maui that same day. There will be shuttles with Roberts Hawaii bringing folks down to the bay but we are asking folks to #carpool and #dropoff as much as possible.
